AD 10 KM Championships RESULTS

THE WEATHER WAS THE WINNER IN THE DEFENCE 10km

In a masterful display of front running, Army’s leading distance athlete, CAPT Craig Anthony, overcame the elements, the course and was never challenged in winning the Defence 10km Championship held at Westerfolds Park in Melbourne.

While no records were broken, CAPT Anthony’s time of 33min 10sec was very impressive under the conditions. Not only did runners face a challenging hilly course, the blustery stormy conditions created some tough headwinds and whipped up dirt throughout the race. “The conditions for competitors were horrendous and whilst records were never going to be challenged, all credit to them for some great performances,” said Race Director, CAPT Frank Kresse (RAN). CAPT Anthony is posted to 3CSSB and had made the journey from Townsville for this event.

In the race for minor placings, SGT Mat Skate led a pack of four runners but made his move up the long incline at the 4km mark and from there held off all challenges to finish second in 35min 46sec with standout veteran WO2 Richard Quirk from 6RAR in third place in 36min 20sec to take out the Men’s Veteran category and make it a clean sweep for Army.

In other results, Navy Recruit Brad Horsfall placed third in the Men’s Open in 37min 08sec and SGT Steven Linane took out the Master’s category in a blistering 38min 05sec.

Powering home in the women’s race and taking out her first Defence title was Ms Jodie Barker, who represented Navy. Jodie finished an impressive 13th overall in a smart time of 41min 21sec. Following closely behind was PTE Rhiannon Brown in 42min 02sec just ahead of fast finishing Navy runner LS Trish Muller from HMAS ALBATROSS in 42min 56sec. Winner of the women’s Veteran category was MAJ Fiona King in 43min 22sec who finished ahead of LEUT Debra Neil.

In the team’s event the CERBERUS Running Club was victorious over the team representing the Australian Federation Guard
